So... maybe you're ready to go the next step and start a new personal business to generate enough money to pay your electric bill, or better yet PAY ALL YOUR HOUSEHOLD BILLS!

The following are PROVEN ways to start a small, home business with your software (that hopefully you got from us;-) and very little cash. No.. these are by no means "get rich quick" schemes but only a few suggestions on how hard work, and persistence, can generate some cash for you and your family.

First things first: in this day and age - most any biz, no matter how small, needs a web site - it's just a sign of the times.

Acquiring your own domain and/ or web site:
Let me first say that there are many options you can elect to do here! Your decision, of the route to take, will effect your ability to publish audio if this will be a part of your "presentation". I'll give you my very best advise; however, keep in mind that these are just my opinions and your "mileage may vary".

The first thing you need to consider is that your site will not just be a set of "text content pages" if you elect to implement audio presentations - they will include an Web based MP3 player that links to your audio files. These audio files will require lot's of server space (a 2 minute duration audio file will be appox. 1 Mb in size). Depending on your personal needs, meaning how many audio files you expect to publish in the future, you'll need to "think/ plan ahead"!

So - are there any FREE web site hosts that you can use? There are ton's of hosts that claim to give you free hosting of your web site - merely do a web search and you'll spent the rest of the day check'n them out! My advise would be that same as Mom gave me long ago - "There is no free lunch so be very leery of these offerings!". The things to consider are the following:

  • does it allow you enough/ lot's of storage space for your files?
  • will they allow you to embed your MP3 Player on your page(s)?
  • will they allow unlimited control over your content - in other words let you create as many web pages as you want?
  • how easy is it to publish/ upload your content/ files? Does it allow normal FTP uploads?
  • will the link (URL) to your page be simple to remember or a complicated, long string that your friends/ family will have a hard time with? (i.e. www.YourFreeWebSiteHost/YourName.com)
  • will your site contain lot's of advertising and/ or banner ads that will clutter up your page(s)? More then likely they will - this is how they make their money.
  • PROS:

    • well.. it's free!

  • CONS:

    • your site will be cluttered with advertising - more then likely

    • your link (URL) will more then likely be complicated and hard to remember

    • more then likely will not allow enough storage space for your audio files - remember - audio files can sometimes by huge in size

    • may not have control over content

So what would I REALLY recommend (if you are serious about doing it the right way)? I would think that getting your own domain name (i.e. www.YourName.com) and pay to have it hosted would be the right track!

Here, again - there are MANY *web hosting sites that will work for you. Most offer more or less the same features so you could use the cost/ fee as a pretty good guide on which host to use - generally speaking.

I have personally used several different hosts: am using "GoDaddy" ( www.godaddy.com ) at the present and have been for several years. I do recommend them but here again - your mileage may vary! I'm sure there are many other hosts that are just as good but will use them as this example.

So how do I proceed to do all this?

  • navigate your browser to www.godaddy.com  (or what ever host server you have decided to use)

  • search for a "*domain name' that you are happy with - spend some time doing this cuz it will forever more be your "home on the web" after you registered it.

  • register your new domain name - at the present time the cost of this is a $9.99 setup fee as well as a $9.99 yearly fee to renew. Most any time - host servers give you a discount if you host your site with them so this fee will more then likely be less then above mentioned fee.

  • select one of the "hosting plans" that they offer. I would recommend selecting the ECONOMY PLAN which gives you 10Gb of storage space for a $4.99 monthly fee. If your needs grow (need more space) you can simply upgrade your plan, at any given time, via your web sites' control panel.

Now that you have got your domain and have access to your site: you'll need to know how to publish your site and create your page(s): possibly with am MP3 Player embedded if you want to use this feature. Teaching you how to create a web site is way beyond the scope of this page - BUT - if you need any help at all - mb@code-it.com will gladly help you get started - IT's EASY TO DO!

PROS:

  • you will have your own domain name that will be easy to remember
  • you will have complete control over your published content
  • you'll have plenty of storage space for your files/ content
  • you'll always have the option to expand
  • will project a very "professional" image - much better then hosing on some free hosting server
  • no advertising clutter unless you elect to have it - it will be up to you!
  • unlimited opportunity to generate personal extra income - if that's your goal
  • possible tax advantages - depending on what you do with it - is it a business?

CONS:

  • $9.99 yearly domain name renewal fee
  • $4.99 monthly hosting fee

* Domain Name = a domain name is an identification label that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control in the Internet. Domain names are also hostnames that identify Internet Protocol (IP) resources such as web sites. Domain names are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name System (DNS).

Individual Internet host computers use domain names as host identifiers, or hostnames. Hostnames are the leaf labels in the domain name system usually without further subordinate domain name space. Hostnames appear as a component in Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) for Internet resources such as web sites.

* Web Hosting Site = a web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called co-location.

The scope of hosting services varies widely. The most basic is web page and small-scale file hosting, where files can be uploaded via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or a Web interface. The files are usually delivered to the Web "as is" or with little processing. Many Internet service providers (ISPs) offer this service free to their subscribers. People can also obtain Web page hosting from other, alternative service providers. Personal web site hosting is typically free, advertisement-sponsored, or inexpensive. Business web site hosting often has a higher expense.

OKAY - now for some real life examples/ ideas that work - to make you some bucks!

The very FIRST thing you need to do is to become proficient with your audio software! Spend the time to get use to all the features, as well as what the software can/ can not do for you. Don't try to "wing it": it will only lose you customers and reputation.

Instead of trying to give you step-by-step instructions on how to create these services - I'll just give you some links to folks that are just "do'n it"! You can get a very good idea, from these links, if this might work for you.

You might think "The competing companies are too numerous: I'll never be successful doing this". Think about when you go to Wall Mart and shop for toothpaste - how many brands are there, on the shelf, starting at you saying "buy me"? You have only to believe in yourself, be persistent, and most of all develop the talent of "marketing".
